Guillermo Vazquez sat through back-to-back Charter Review Commission meetings with the hope that the commission would recommend a city charter change he and hundreds of city employees want to see. For weeks, leaders promised that the 15-member commission would take up so-called “parking lot issues,” or changes that members of the public had proposed — but only after they finished devising recommendations for the sections of the charter that Mayor Ron Nirenberg had directed the group to study.
which counts about 450 city employees as members, wants these workers to have the same political rights as police and fire employees and City Council aides, who can financially support and work on campaigns on their off time. Two of the 10 council members have expressed support for granting civil service employees these same rights. District 2 Councilman Jalen McKee-Rodriguez wrote to the commission in February to ask members to study the matter.
