Prince Charles is now officially King Charles III after a ceremony on Saturday morning.

The new king ascended to the throne in a traditional ceremony at St. James’s Palace in London. A number of leading British political figures were in attendance for the event, along with members of the royal family.

“I am deeply aware of this great inheritance and of the duties and heavy responsibilities of sovereignty which have now passed to me,” he said.“I know how deeply you and the entire nation, and I think I may say the whole world, sympathize with me in this irreparable loss we have all suffered.” Charles also declared the day of his late mother's funeral would be a public holiday in the United Kingdom. The date has not been announced — however, it is anticipated to occur around Sept. 19.

The ceremony came after Charles became, at age 73, the oldest British monarch to become king, surpassing King William IV, who became king at 64 years old in 1830. Charles's wife, Camilla, is now the"queen consort," Buckingham Palace confirmed.Queen Elizabeth's death sparked an outpouring of mourning around the globe.

“Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was more than a monarch,” Biden said in a statement Thursday. “She defined an era.”
