FILE - This March 18, 2020 file photo taken in Idaho shows a form for the U.S. Census 2020. It’s a mystery that Census Bureau statisticians and outside experts are trying to unravel: Why were there so many unanswered questions about households in the 2020 census? The blank answers spanned across all categories of questions and all modes of responding.
Residents did not respond to a multitude of questions about sex, race, Hispanic background, family relationships and age, even when providing a count of the number of people living in the home, according to documents released by the agency. Statisticians had to fill in the gaps. The documents, made public in response to an open records request from a Republican redistricting advocacy group, don’t shed much light on why questions were left unanswered, though theories abound. Some observers say software used in the first census in which most Americans could respond online allowed people to skip questions. Others say the pandemic made it harder to reach people who didn’t respond.
Ruggles initially thought it had to do with the software used by people who answered online — about two-thirds of U.S. households. Other countries such as Australia and Canada, which have used similar software for censuses, saw the number of unanswered questions drop to almost zero because respondents couldn’t proceed if they didn’t answer a question.“I guess in the U.S. version they must just have accepted incomplete responses,” Ruggles said.
If available records didn’t turn up the information needed, they turned to the statistical technique calledthat the Census Bureau has used for 60 years. The technique has been challenged and upheld in courts after past censuses.
There is no mystery, I left many questions unanswered because I thought they were intrusive & none of their god damned business. Why do they need my phone or email address to start? Hell No, Frack Off!
Why did you delete this one? Why are they surprised to find anomalies in the sensus after an election riddled with anomalies? Tampering in a vast scale is my guess.
Let’s see: trust issues of the government no matter what party is running it? :stupid questions? :the counting of non-citizens? :all of the above? Why are you even asking? Ask the IRS, they know everything else.
Maybe because Trump tried to push anti-immigrant rhetoric on the Census in the midst of waging a war on Brown toned immigrants. They went unanswered because the respondents feared for the safety of themselves and their loved ones. We need to redo the 2020 Census.
So many people didn’t fill them out during covid and then their were no census takers going door to door for those that didn’t complete the forms like 10 years ago.
Trump and the GOP happened
I did mine online and there not many questions at all
Trump had his hand in fudging the numbers
We lost most of the information from the 1890s census in what stemmed from what amounted to a dumpster fire- this past census' missing information stems from a Trumpster fire.
Um, they didn’t want to give their info to the Trump Administration.
Probably because of covid. Why not?
Easy! Lack of trust in our government these days.
I’ll tell you what happened … Trump! Hell I never received one at all! I’m a registered voter and have lived in the same place for 8 years!
As somebody who has answered these questions before, I'm just going to say that there are Waaaay too many questions on this thing.
I know why! When the census taker came by he stood 10 ft from our door and only asked a few questions because he was concerned about Covid protection. I don’t blame him.
It’s been politicized in a time I suspect most folks just want to be left the hell alone.
If I were to guess, trump spent four years telling his followers how they shouldn't trust the government, only him.
Already know.... Trump/Ross.
illegal immigrants happened thanks to biden
People probably didn't trust it because of Trump
Maybe they’re fraudulent? Has anyone looked for cellular bamboo or Alibaba watermarks? Where are the routers?
Fear of tracking and irrelevant questions CommerceGov uscensusbureau
I did it online and answered everything.
PoliticsWolf trump happened.
I'll tell you what happened......ILLEGAL ALEINS!!! They refused because they were afraid they'd get deported!! And what's more, that would be true, and I'd love to help deport them. This is what you get with our NEW, open borders!!!
Trump.
Simple. We didn’t trust the criminal in chief.
Two reasons: 1. People were afraid to answer the questions or respond at all. 2. We're in the middle of a Pandemic
Lack of reading skills? Just a guess.🤷♂️😬
Oh well, sometimes there is trust issues here and of course, it becomes politicized and defeats its purpose
