) - Mobile’s population shrank by nearly 700 people from July 2022 to July of last year, according to estimates released Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau. The numbers in Mobile show a long-trending population slide. Officially, it’s down to 182,595. But Mobile Chief of Staff James Barber said the true population after annexation is about 206,000. That puts the city second in the state, behind Huntsville.
And Barber said he believes the Census Bureau estimates may be missing growth in the pre-annexation parts of the city from Mobile’s affordable housing initiatives. “If you check with our building permits for new housing starts, I think they may have doubled over the past year,” he said. “And so there’s a lot of trending material or data that we’re looking at that the Census Bureau would not have except for the historical.”
Growth in Baldwin County remains strong. Silverhill was Alabama’s fastest-growing municipality in the last year and has been since the 2020 census. In addition, Foley, Loxley and Fairhope are among the 15 municipalities with the largest percentage increases over the past year.Drier air expectedBCSO makes second arrest connected to Stockton mass shooting
