NEW: The CDC is ordering a sweeping nationwide halt on evictions through December for people who are struggling to pay rent due to the pandemic. The agency said the goal is to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

But this new ban, which doesn't offer any way for landlords to recoup unpaid rent, is being met with a mixed response. Landlords are worried about falling off a cliff too. Doug Bibby is the president of the National Multifamily Housing Council. He says,"We are disappointed that the Administration has chosen to enact a federal eviction moratorium without the existence of dedicated, long-term funding for rental and unemployment assistance."

Under the rules of the order, renters have to sign a declaration saying they don't make more than $99,000 a year - or twice that if filing a joint tax return. And that they have no other option if evicted other than homelessness or living with more people in close proximity.

Hint to landlords: Use month-to-month leases. Collect a damage deposit that is not applied to rent but is large enough to cover a month's rent plus potential, reasonable damages. Make rent due on the last day of the month. If rent is late, issue a notice to vacate on the 1st.

Middle America has No idea how easy it is for slugs to deceive government they have no income subsequently collect Snap benefits and a free ride on rent. I have several tenants working full time not paying rent to take advantage of the rent moratorium. Small landlord is furious!

Is there a moratorium on mortgages, too? This isn't rocket science. This is business. People take out loans to buy property to lease to other people. No money from renter = no loan payment = foreclosure on the property by the bank. So person who took risk for business loses. 😕🙄

It sounds nice not to evict people, but not all land lords are wealthy. They have mortgages to pay on the places people rent, if renters don’t pay, mortgages won’t be either. To do this with out taking care of both ends will hurt people more than it helps.

While I'm in favor of assisting people who have been hit financially by covid, I would want an eviction moratorium that gives landlords a chance to get paid too. What happens to tenants who can't pay rent when the property goes into foreclosure because the landlord has no income?

I always thought rental costs were outrageously high. Landlords are money lovers. The fairest among them are okay, but too many are only in for the money. While prices should be lower, and fairer, during lockdown, bills should be PAUSED, with no debt accumulation whatsoever.

I call bullshit on this. First, if the CDC has the authority to do this based on 'public health,' then they have the authority to order Flint, Michigan's water system be repaired. They'd also have the authority to order a mask mandate and a national testing strategy.
