CLEVELAND, Ohio — The people want an experienced coach, a championship coach. They want a coach who can fix the Cavs’ offense and convince Donovan Mitchell to sign an extension. They want the best coach that Cavs governor Dan Gilbert’s money can buy, and they don’t realize how different that request is from their others.
Their list of candidates would’ve looked more robust one offseason ago, when the Cavs lost an ugly first-round series to the New York Knicks and Bickerstaff’s approval rating nadired among Cleveland fans. But Cleveland preached patience with Bickerstaff after a 50-win season. The Cavs thought he deserved a chance to grow from last year’s playoff failure. They thought he could build on that result if they gave him a few more shooters, plus time to adjust, and they were right.
then why did they keep him that long in the first place? If a playoff series win couldn’t save Bickerstaff’s job, then why did Cleveland emphasize that goal so much this season? And if Bickerstaff’s improvements still fall short of the Cavs’ coaching vision, then why didn’t they pool Gilbert’s money for last year’s coaching crop instead?
