Cause of death of San Diego jail inmate remains unknown [Breaking]

An autopsy on a 46-year-old inmate who died last week at San Diego Central Jail did not pinpoint a cause of death for the man, officials said Saturday.

Lonnie Newton Rupard was found unresponsive in his cell at about 10:45 p.m. Thursday. He was transported to a nearby hospital and died early Friday. The San Diego County Medical Examiner conducted an autopsy Saturday and found no signs of trauma, according to a statement from the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.

Rupard, a National City resident, did not test positive for any illegal substances, the statement said. He was alone in his cell, and the cause and manner of death remain under investigation, pending further laboratory results and evaluation.Sheriff officials said Rupard had been detained in county jail since December, when he was arrested by National City police for allegedly violating the terms of his conditional release from state prison.
