Brom is survived by four siblings. A sister remembers her brother as charismatic and caring.

Longtime Bishop Robert Henry Brom, who guided the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego through a sex-abuse scandal, was found dead in his home on Monday at the age of 83, according to family.“Bishop Brom was a pastor, teacher and servant leader of the Catholic community in San Diego and Imperial Counties for 23 years,” San Diego Bishop Robert McElroy said in a press statement.

Saint John Paul appointed him to be the bishop of Duluth in 1963 and coadjutor bishop of San Diego in 1989. Brom was appointed bishop of San Diego in 1990, retiring in 2013.He helped establish the $12 million Pastoral Center on Paducah Drive in the Bay Ho neighborhood, replacing the diocese’s previous offices at the University of San Diego.

After the Boston Globe launched its investigative series into the church in 2002, Brom revealed allegations against 23 priests at the San Diego diocese. The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles established something of the precedent early that year, reaching a $660 million court settlement involving about 500 cases.
