'All of these characters love each other, care about each other, and have these important bonds, but almost every single one of them is keeping an extremely significant secret.' –cassieclare

Author Cassandra Clare has emerged from the shadows once more to bring fans of her beloved Shadowhunters world yet another adventure-filled novel.is the first of three novels in The Last Hours series to be published, and it follows Shadowhunters Cordelia Carstairs, James Herondale, Matthew Fairchild, and Lucie Herondale throughout Edwardian London as they deal with haphazard demons, young love, and life-changing secrets.

To make sure her novel was as authentic as possible , Clare admits to having an aesthetic-focused Pinterest board to help her really get into the time period. She also revealed that she read a copious amount of Edwardian-era literature, watched the beloved television showand delved into the private world of Edwardian diaries to really immerse herself in that time period.

“We tend to think of progression as just being a straight line forward, with the past sort of all lumped into a general area of not as enlightened as we are now. And that's not actually true, progress tends to move ahead and then back,” Clare explains. “It was important to me [to include this] because there were people in this particular time period, like Anna, who were living lives openly as gay and gender nonconforming. I feel like those people existed and should be represented.

Although there are 17 other books in Clare’s Shadowhunter universe, newcomers will easily be able to readwithout having read any of the prior novels. The Last Hours series can act as a stand-alone trilogy, but it is definitely enhanced by prior knowledge of the world.
