The Yankees lost 3-2 to the Pirates on Sunday at PNC Park.

Rodon pitched into the seventh inning for the first time in his 12 starts, he established new season-highs throwing 103 pitches and striking out 210 and he didn’t walk anyone. His last pitch off the afternoon, a weak two-out grounder off Jason Delay’s bat, turned into a game-tying double instead of inning-ending out when it deflected off third base and down the left-field line. This still was a very good showing by Rodon, who allowed three runs on six hits over 6 2/3 innings.

“It’s been a weird year ,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said before Sunday’s game. “It’s been a struggle. Obviously starting the year injured, he was kind of playing catch-up all year, coming back having some struggles, going back on the injured list for a brief stint. -- The Yankees were trailing 2-0 and were being no-hit by two Pirates pitchers until the sixth when Estevan Florial led off with a single and DJ LeMahieu followed with an RBI double.

-- Rehabbing his way back from spring shoulder surgery, right-hander Frankie Montas made his season debut Sunday allowing one run in a one-inning rehab start for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Montas walked the leadoff hitter and was tagged for a one-out RBI double in a 17-pitch outing in which he struck out two.
