Have you ever spotted an ad about getting paid to have your car covered in advertising and then just drive around? The car wrap scam has been around for more than 20 years. It just keeps going because there's always a new batch of victims to target. These scammers often seek out college students looking for a way to make a few extra bucks. If you respond to the text, email or ad, the scammer will send you a check to deposit.
They'll tell you to use some of that money to pay the 'installer' who will wrap your car with the ad. The scammer will also tell you how to pay the installer: by money order, with a payment app, with cryptocurrency or by wiring the money. These are all ways that let them get the money quickly. When you deposit that check, it might clear because banks are required to make funds available within a few days. But it can take days for a bank to figure out the check is fake.
