This notion was somewhat changed with the 981 generation Cayman, which introduced the original GT4. While many of its bits and pieces were derived from full-on Porsche GT department components, specifically around the suspension, the powertrain was still based on one from a standard Carrera – rather than being one of the department’s bespoke units.
With the 718 GT4, so came another new engine, this time a 4-litre derived from the twin-turbo 3-litre in the 991.2 generation 911, but once again it wasn’t a ‘real’ GT engine. This all changed with the GT4 RS, though, as it packs the same MGD.D flat-six as found in the 992 GT3. Yes it’s 10bhp down, blame that on a more complex exhaust system that needs to traverse the rear axle, but it’s the real deal complete with a 9000rpm redline.
