Published: Jun. 01, 2022, 8:39 p.m.Two candidates who finished second in Alabama House races in the Republican primary last week are asking for new elections in the two districts because of voting problems in Etowah County acknowledged by state, local, and party officials.
Grant, Isbell, and Reagan all say the appropriate remedy would be to redo the election in the two districts on June 21, the date of the statewide primary runoff. State Republican Party Chair John Wahl said last week the party was “incredibly upset” about the situation and was investigating and looking for the best way to fix it based on the law and court precedents. On Tuesday, Wahl said the party would certify the results, which he said would then be subject to challenge by the candidates.
Grant said he knows of at least two precincts, Mountainboro and the Elliott Community Center in Gadsden, where some voters did not receive the correct ballots for the House races. “The presidential 2020 election, election integrity was questioned,” Isbell said. “And it depends on which side of that you’re on. The person that we all wanted to win did not. But if anything was wrong with that election, it would have been fraud. Here, these were just mistakes. I do not dare to say that there was fraudulence at all. It’s mistake. It’s human error. These things do happen but if we want to have a clear and precise look at this, I feel the thing to do is have a re-election.
Reagan said he checked and was told he still lived in the district. That was a question because district lines moved when the Legislature passed a reapportionment plan last year, as it does after every census. Reagan requested and received a refund of his qualifying fee from the state Republican party. He had another surprise coming.
