What does Transhumanism, Ayn Rand and the U.S. Presidential election have in common? They are the connecting themes in a new book by Ben Murnane entitled, “Transhuman Citizen”., who drove a coffin-shaped bus around the U.S. attempting to persuade the public that death is not inevitable and that transhumanism is a political as much as a scientific solution to the troubles of the 21st Century.
The life of Istvan, with his campaign to make transhumanism mainstream, brings these themes of libertarianism, posthumanism and politics, longevity and life extension, together in one life story. On his travels he had discovered Rand’s The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged and as he finished the first of these books, he apparently jotted down in his journal that “The Fountainhead has stripped away the invisible monster I’ve fought my whole life - for the first time I no longer fought just a shadow - but a recognizable evil, a recognizable beast.
The book goes onto document Itsvan’s pursuit of the transhumanist cause, through the lens of Rand’s belief in the creativity and opportunism of free-thinking individuals, and importantly the individual instinct and societal need to push through the limits of human possibility. He told me, “In the last few years, transhumanism has been through a vicious washing machine. A decade ago, transhumanism seemed super cool because it was seen as futuristic and Star Trek-like. But now it’s becoming very real with AI, mRNA, and robotics. People know it’s coming and partially already here. Despite more negative press, I still believe transhumanism is the future...We need it to survive.”Istvan believes it is A.I.
Istvan once wrote an article claiming that AI Day will replace Christmas as the most important holiday in less than 25 Years. Today he tells me that he should have made that timescale two years.
