Let's dive in
Photo Credit: @LucaSgro / BACKGRIDSuch a tiny vest is impractical in its natural state as in part of a three-piece suit, not to mention it’s corny and stuffy. But when removed from that buttoned-up scenario, it’s formal-gone-wild. I often think about Janet Jackson's cropped, navel-baring black vest in the 1993 hit music video "That's The Way Love Goes" in which she grooves and swivels her hips in the itty-bitty statement piece. Then there is also Kate Moss at Glastonbury running around the muddy grounds in nothing but a black vest and tiny shorts. Recently, it’s become a runway staple, first at Saint Laurent for spring 2020. Telfar, Celine, Maximilian Davis for Fashion East, Raf Simons, and Miu Miu all offered their take, as did Saint Laurent once again for Spring 2021. There is also Ann Demeulemeester who is always known for a lil ole vest.
In a twisted way, maybe this return of the vest is part of the return to the office, as people are getting more vaccinated and people are longing for normalcy. TheVoguearchives are filled with vest stories from the late ’80s and the early ’90s, when workwear reigned supreme. In January 1989, an article titled “Well-Vested” gave new life to what they referred to as the, “linchpin of Annie Hall’s suit” by showing it with nothing or a T-shirt underneath. According to Isaac Mizrahi: “It’s an easier, less serious approach to a bare look.” In another article, this time from the September 1992 issue, there was a whole glorious spread dedicated to waistcoats in every flavor and fabric.
So is the tiny vest... hot? Can it be unstuffy? Does it have allure? Mizrahi’s sentiment still holds true, andVogueMarket Editor Alexandra Gurvitch agrees that less is more when it comes to wearing one this season. “Wear nothing underneath,” she says, but also adds, “You can be a Fran Fine or a Diane Keaton in a vest. Choose your fighter.” In other words, pick between the sassy, saucy Fine and proper Keaton. As for me? I'm going full Fine and sans an undershirt. I'm, well, invested. headtopics.comRead more: Vogue Magazine »
