This month’s projections from the Bureau of Reclamation show that it is possible Lake Powell — the nation’s second-largest reservoir after Lake Mead — could, though most projections suggest that is unlikely. “In addition to seeking the best-available science, Reclamation is actively exploring the feasibility of modifications to Glen Canyon Dam to be able to produce power below the current minimum power pool elevation , and perhaps as close as we can get to dead pool elevation ,” Williams said. “As we’re still in the planning process, we will continue to work with the Basin States, stakeholders, and partners on the best possible outcomes to protect facilities and water level.
Jack Schmidt, director of the Center for Colorado River Studies at Utah State University, said the study’s announcement is indicative of the new reality in the Colorado River basin. The bureau’s estimates for runoff in the Colorado River are based on the last 30 years of record: ten relatively wet years in the 1990s and the following 20 drier years, which many scientists have called a climate change-related “megadrought.”
Fly over it in a Blackhawk
And no one is surprised. We see this stuff coming from years away. In 10 years it will be 'Life expectancy 25% shorter and disease burden 25% greater for Utahns living near Inland Port jurisdictional lands.' utpol utleg
Drain it and fill lake mead. I get that it’s a great place for recreation and what not, but if it isn’t generating any power and it isn’t holding any water, it’s failing two of its main purposes. Lake mead loses less to seepage and is the more important of the two.
LittleMariposa The West generates a lot of electricity through hydroelectric turbines on dammed rivers. If the rivers are dry, there is no electricity, no backup system & no storage system. Therefore, the West needs alternatives like solar & wind turbines.
Why doesn't Utah just pray, like they did for rain? It should work, right?
Patbagley And to think developers want to build a 150-mile 'straw' to suck the last dregs of the lake to St. George. Wake UP, sheeple! 🎸The climes they are a'changin'! 🎶
Why is it Dangerously? Will the dam fall down without water behind it?
