BHADLA, India—In a dusty northwest India desert dotted with cows and the occasional camel, a solar-power plant is producing some of the world’s cheapest energy.
Built in 2018 by India’s Acme Solar Holdings Ltd., it can generate 200 megawatts of electricity, enough to power all the homes in a middle-size U.S. town. Acme sells the electricity to distributors for 2.44 rupees a kilowatt-hour, a record low for solar power in India, a country that data trackers say has the world’s cheapest solar energy.
This is great and needed on a planetary scale but would like to see more rooftop solar. This is our chance to democratize energy. Between Bloomberg created their own version of your article ...

davidfrum And what if it can't? Gonna still burn fossil fuels and destroy the planet? Does this not encapsulate the lack of inherent ethos and ethics in capitalism? The Invisible Hand is popular ALWAYS, but right? Only sometimes.
davidfrum What do you fo when the sun is not shining? Also, what do you do in northern latitudes during the winter? Blind enthusiasm does not over ride the technical / engineering reality and challenges.
Must be California with all their taxes.
davidfrum In Germany we have now the highest energy costs in Europe bc of solar & wind. If Solar And Wind Are So Cheap, Why Are They Making Electricity So Expensive? If Solar Panels Are So Clean, Why Do They Produce So Much Toxic Waste?

What?!?!?!?! Greta says 'nothing is being done.' What happened?
ground breaking movement, kudos India!👍🏻
Except you cannot turn it on and off when you want. And what is the price for that?
No
davidfrum Well solar causes cancer, now we are producing so much of it, when will people wake up
😂 haha 😆 haha
Renewable energy is some female sh*t
davidfrum wait, does that mean that in general it's NOT competitive and represents a boondoggle kept afloat by government subsidies?
That’s great if the land you cover isn’t taken out of food production. How about covering the huge buildings in the cities with solar cells? 😏🤔
If you don’t mind being wealthy to afford electricity
Next stop: improving storage
yet Adani is opening a new mine in Australia What a fool?
Cool thing about exponential curves: they curve exponentially.
Muy buen enfoque. Después de la 'fiebre del oro' la 'fiebre de la energía'. Matamos el suelo y su bioma robándole el Sol. Todo menos reconocer los efectos de la desertización provocada por la pandemia.
Eclipsing Lol. Not quite, not yet, and probably not ever
Doubtful
A genuine question simonahac. Can renewables generate enough power to fire coke ovens or do we need to wait until the technology comes online to do so?
Fake news
mdc think this mostly depends on who's getting the most government subsidy $$ and why RWMann
And the marginal cost is zero
mims It's beating coal HERE in the U.S. Where have you been?
Real-time wholesale electric prices in PJM, Northeast ISO and ERCOT are currently well below 3.4 cents wholesale (except ERCOT West where wind intermittency has caused power prices to spike 10 times higher than the rest of ERCOT).
There’s a variety of cost externalities that should be added to the price of coal but our governments & societies choose to subsidize with our health.
Solar power it's climate friendly
At least thousands acres of productive land isn’t being sacrificed for this experiment. On the east coast of america, the destruction of farm and woodlands for these solar deserts is horrible
And when the sun is not shinning?
You still need fossil fuels to build them
Absolutely, but it has to go a long way to replace it. The International Solar Alliance is an alliance of 121 countries initiated by India & France to promote Solar Energy usage and share it with each other in a solar grid.
So, why are people fretting over Trump's new budget that supposedly cuts out some of the solar and other credits? If it is really a winner, the economics will show it.
Problem with the world is they wont change, they want profit
The sun created coal.
Once battery technology allows for storage on an industrial scale, absolutely.
They got a ticker symbol?
Yes
