Oh, him? That's the guy who wants to be mayor
As a testament to the potency of his nascent campaign, a coterie of elected officials, public employees, lobbyists and other courtiers packed the warehouse of a Westside trucking company last week for Davis' official launch.
He has formed deep relationships with many of the city's influential players. One well-known and longtime supporter, for example, is Susie Wiles, a veteran Jacksonville political consultant and now one of Donald Trump's key strategists. He has also built bridges. Though not as well known, Davis' relationship with Curry's political operation was once icy. They are now key allies.
Davis' opponents — particularly City Council member and mayoral candidate LeAnna Cumber — will try to turn those strengths into crippling weaknesses. Here is what they'll say: Davis is a career politician. He has never held a real job. He is a soft, limousine Republican. Born in Indiana and now a homeowner in blue-blooded Ortega,"Westside Daniel" was never as Westside as he claimed and never less so than now.
But if the city's political history is any guide, there is a decent chance Davis is right — none of that will matter. He will have virtually unlimited financial resources to tell his story — one he is confident in — and to eviscerate his opponents. He will have the benefit of incumbency behind him, with little of the baggage. He will be everywhere: In your TV, your mail, your radio.
