Last week marked six months of the Israeli military offensive in Gaza, and over the past six months, I’ve wondered if art can make a difference in life and death.
This sentiment is best encapsulated in “Lovers. Outside the world is on fire.,” which hangs opposite the gallery’s door, greeting visitors upon entry. The painting, which features several collaged and hand-drawn elements, shows two nude figures embracing in bed, the room bursting with sumptuous shades of red and orange. The view beyond the bedroom windows reveals a burning cityscape. The painting presents love as a form of protest rather than an act of nihilism in the face of destruction.
Again, Milan complicates these themes with other, more utopic pictures. In “You Belong Here,” people sunbathe nude along an impressionistically rendered lakeside, one figure suspended mid-leap into the water.
