Divestment News

Israel,Protesters,Universities

It's become a common chant at colleges and universities across the nation. Protestors calling on their institutions to divest from Israel.

by GEOFF HARRIS | The National DeskA student protester parades a Palestinian flag outside the entrance to Hamilton Hall on the campus of Columbia University, Tuesday, April 30, 2024, in New York. Early Tuesday, dozens of protesters took over Hamilton Hall, locking arms and carrying furniture and metal barricades to the building. Columbia responded by restricting access to campus. to "divest from Israel .

Think of divestment as the opposite of investment. When protestors chant "divest from Israel," they're asking their school to sell off any investments they have with companies tied to Israel. However, each school has different demands, and not all are asking for the same thing. Students feel like this is their institution, they have some say," said William Youmans, an associate professor of media & public affairs at George Washington University., protestors are asking the school to divest from any company linked to Israel like Microsoft and Amazon. Yale is asking for something else. Those protesters want divestment from weapons manufacturers.

Because some of the Fortune 500 companies, some of the largest companies on the American market are weapons manufacturers, technological organizations. So anyone with sort of a broad index of investments usually includes stocks in weapons makers," Youmans said.came to an agreement with students and faculty protesting the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza. A step Youmans said could set a precedent for how other schools respond to the calls for divestment.

I think this is actually a perfect model for other universities to follow and I think is only sort of a proper response to what we've seen happening in Gaza since October," said Youmans.
