Opinion: California turned a constitutional shield into a government sword

California citizens who sue the government for violating their rights had better watch out: under a bizarre state law called “Anti-SLAPP,” they risk being sued by the government for doing so, on the theory that they’re violating the government’s own constitutional rights.

At least, that’s the argument lawyers for the city of Rancho Mirage are making in an ongoing lawsuit in which property owners challenged the constitutionality of an ordinance barring them from renting out their houses. Viewing that ordinance as a violation of their constitutional right to private property, they filed a lawsuit—only to have the city respond by filing an “Anti-SLAPP” motion against them. The city argues that their true motive in the case was to censor the government’s free speech.

Many states have such laws. Where the Golden State is unique is that its courts have ruled that the government itself has free speech rights protected by the “Anti-SLAPP” law. That means cities can sue their own citizens for “intimidating” the government whenever they have the temerity to sue over actions they think are illegal.

Letter: The Tanners were never anti-Mormon, only anti-liesYour heading, “epicenter of anti-Mormonism,” is absolutely offensive and not the correct expression for the 60 years of a lifetime of the studies and dedication of Jerald and Sandra Tanner. In LDS circles they are only known as being “anti-Mormon.” Terrible. Crazy, The 1830 Book of Mormon was edited from trinitarian godhead to 3 separate beings. Joseph was still trying to figure out what the godhead was! Ruins the first vision accounts. You can't be 'anti-lies' when you build your entire business on telling lies and half-truths.

Will electric cars replace the need for public transit in California? Those opposed to raising taxes to fund rail expansions have long claimed electric cars will make such investments unnecessary. Experts say boosting transit is less about greening mobility than limiting demand for energy. ask a poor person jfc Need gas car to go more miles EV only works in smaller town. You can’t out-drive traffic - you *are* traffic. Internal combustion aside, electric vehicles will still be contributors to GHG emissions and heavy particulates in the air and run-off in any communities near streets and highways. The solution is less people in personal cars.
