The COVID-19 crisis is exacerbating the severe economic and health challenges this community already endures.

In the letter to Governor Newsom—as well as in a virtual press conference this past Thursday—trans-led groups, including the Trans Latin@ Coalition and the Transgender Health and Wellness Center, emphasized the need not only for more support and services, but also the fact that funding for these services should be given to trans-led groups who understand firsthand the needs of the community.

The letter went on to explain specific disparities that must be immediately addressed, including housing, healthcare, employment, and decarceration. “The needs, issues, and voice of trans and gender nonconforming individuals across the state are not being heard,” said Bamby Salcedo, President/CEO of The TransLatin@ Coalition, during the press conference. “Our needs and issues are not being centered in what needs to happen.
