“We are fully prepared to take this issue to the voters of California to preserve the freedom and access drivers and riders want and need,” Lyft said in a statement.Gig economy companies, whose business models are dependent the use of contractors, have been among the most vocal critics of AB5. San Francisco–based DoorDash, expressing its disappointment at the vote, said it was committed to a new law that would guarantee benefits and protections, including a minimum wage, for its delivery drivers.

The bill goes back to the Assembly for a final vote, known as a “concurrence vote” and then it moves on to Gov. Newsom, according to a staffer for Gonzales.

California Senate approves bill regulating gig economySACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — The California Senate has passed a bill that would give new wage and benefit protections to workers at so-called gig economy companies like Uber and Lyft. The 29-11... Sounds Good; THEY NEED LICENSES. Uber and Lyft together lost over $6B so far this year. So what does California do? They pass a bill that if signed into law would cause them to lose more money. I would rather have a job making less money than no job at all. Careful what you wish for. The attraction to gig economy work is you can work when you want whenever you want. If you’re now an employee guess what, you work when the company tells you plus good chance you don’t have a gig job anymore when they cut back in your market.
