“Everyone is going to be watching to see what the results are going to be,” an education researcher said.

After gaining speed slowly over the last two decades, a movement to start the school day later for middle and high school students just got a massive boost from California.mandating later school start times, which have been associated with a slew of health benefits for teens, he turned what has long been a local issue into one that could soon be hotly debated in statehouses across the nation.

“Everyone is going to be watching to see what the results are going to be,” said Deborah Temkin, senior director of the education program at Child Trends, a Washington-based research organization. “California, as one of the largest states in the country, can really define policy movements across the country. If this turns out to be successful, with relatively few consequences, then I think it’s something that other states will likely consider.

A later start to class can force parents to scramble for early morning child care before starting long commutes. In some districts that have moved start times, teens have struggled to find after-school jobs and were no longer available after school to watch younger siblings. Other communities grappled with scheduling sports practices, especially in the early darkness of winter, and districts have had to come up with extra funds to adjust bus routes or provide child care.

I'm an old lady who has always had teen sleep patterns. Get up later; go to bed later. I taught high school for 18 years. Many students would have performed better, had they been able to start school at, or after, 8:00--not 7:25, 7:30, or 7:45.

They going to control what time they go to bed too?

This should have been done decades ago. It's common sense. But as we know, the education system doesn't always use common sense.

Ummm... 8 am start time for middle schools is not much difference from whatever it is now 😂

The dictator is at it again. He must be stopped and recalled

Curriculum is still garbage. Regardless.

Can Cutting Back School Times Be A?

The state's employers need to take the times into account so their employees who are parents can spend the early morning hours with their kids.

School times are made for parents who need to work

So it could work or it could not work is what you’re saying.

The last thing anyone in California needs is to be away from any kind of school.
