California is one of several states forecast to fall victim to the first major U.S. heat wave of 2024 this week, with the National Weather Service issuing a slew of warnings for the Golden State.Maps from the NWS show areas currently under excessive heat warnings expected to become active throughout the week, with central California being the primary area affected.
'Those in areas covered by excessive heat warnings are urged to limit any outdoor activity to reduce time in the sun, stay in an air-conditioned place and to drink plenty of water while it's hot out.'Heat related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat and high humidity events,' the NWS said in one of its warnings. Children and pets should never be left in vehicles, even with cooling measures like air conditioning, as this can result in serious injury and even death.
