If you live in a single-family home in California, it’s likely everyone else in your neighborhood does too. That could change under a proposed state measure.

The bill would not spell the end of single-family housing in the state. Developers could continue to build such homes on their land if they chose, and the legislation prohibits the demolition of single-family homes to build fourplexes without further government review. Even so, allowing as many as four homes on land where now just one is permitted would trigger significant change compared with how California has grown over much of the last century.

“I do not think it’s possible to solve housing affordability problems and meet climate change goals without dealing with this issue of single-family homes only,” Galante said. “We have population growth. We have job growth. People need to live somewhere, and they’re now competing for a very limited supply.”

“When people around the world think of L.A., one of the things they think of is a home with a backyard,” Yaroslavsky said. “I think much of it should be preserved.”

Well, I have no problem with that. I live in CAnada, not CAlifornia. But, if one must use Graeco-Latin prefixes, then I suggest “tetraplex” rather than “fourplex” and “multiplex-residential” for low-density residential structures of unspecified occupancy.

NOOO.

I came from Maryland and the town I lived in one High School a quarter of the football team ended up in prison by 35

Great overpopulate single family neighborhoods but don’t fix the infrastructure. No thank you. We have enough overpopulation here as it is.

Under Senate Bill 50, California cities and counties would be required to permit duplexes, triplexes and fourplexes on much of the residential land now zoned for only one house. Nearly two-thirds of the residences in California are single-family homes.

What? That's not going to make every local jurisdiction in every metro area automatically just go out and change their joning laws. PS - there's no parking available in our single family neighborhood. Converting one single family home to a 4-plex would be a disaster.

Where they had to studied the fourplex idea to say this would keep California from becoming all concrete.

Lastly having neighborhoods devoted to fourplexes would work. In other states you got neighborhoods devoted only to duplexes. You also got fourplex neighborhoods or complexes devoted to rentals of fourplexes. Someone must of visited places with fourplexes outside of California.

California screwed up themselves so they now have to fix it. Fourplexes are actually a good thing. However having unrealistic gas policy and banning coal doesn't work.

Also if the country had one environmental rules and had the same rules on anti-discrimination then we would not have the confusion we see today.

Nope I don't hate Ronald Reagan in case someone wants to wonder. If gas in California and the country was the same then things would be cheaper. If America had the same rules for employment including wages, break times instead of by local, state and territory

It seems urban blight and crime is on the menu today.

Of course they want it to change. Gas is so high so what else are they supposed to do since it was mess created by then Governor Reagan. Of course he would come back from the grave and given a lesson he would of never kept a California standard after the Federal one was created.
