In July of 2019, Oregon passed a bill that allows students to take excused absences for mental health related issues.
He says anything that reduces stigma could go a long way to prevent tragedies like the one his family suffered."It's not the time to be shy. It's the time to bring these conversations out of the shadows so we can help those who need it." El Cerrito High operates on a block schedule, which means each student only has four classes a semester with a year's worth of material condensed into each class. That makes it extra difficult to catch up when students miss a lot of instructional time. Rader says there's a clear correlation between students with mental health challenges and absences, especially for those with anxiety.
tumblr ruined a generation 🌚
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
AshleyJudd Stuff like this should be nation wide. Thats the problem with the US, so much is up to the states rather than it being done on a federal level.
EighteenX18 Employers should do this, too.
SFdirewolf This is absolutely necessary. Students shouldn’t be forced to sit in school when they’re not feeling well enough to be there. They need rest and self-care time, at the very least. I hope California follows through. mentalillness StigmaFree
Would love to see NY consider this
Didn’t realize there had to be a difference in “I’m not feeling well,” and “I’m not feeling mentally well” in an excused absence.
Americans are traumatized on a daily basis.
This is a great action, but what is most important is to reducing the cost of healthcare so that everyone can reach all the health care they need for their mental health.
Its kinda of ridiculous but at the same time super understandable
I have been in therapy every week for two years now. And counting. No matter the insight I have gained, all I still want is for everyone to leave me alone. I have been open and honest. I would love to find some cure through magic or hard work. Please respond with 1000 million $..
And what are the results so far? Is it actually working like it's supposed to? Where's the data to support it? Show me.
As a Teacher, most of my illness days taken were 'mental health' days. Sometimes, you just need a break. If it makes them better students, this is a good thing.
Can teachers get additional mental health days too?

Teaching kids (and ourselves) about feelings is an important step in understanding emotional intelligence (EQ) and increasing one's empathy toward others.
Great news.
There are people that don't think getting help for mental issues is a good idea, maybe they think that school shootings are a better idea....eye roll
Mental illness is a real problem for many students. I can’t tell you what it was like when one student attempted suicide. I helped her get psych treatment & she got well enough to finish her degree and now she has a job that’s even more challenging but she’s doing very well.
Can you imagine that generation fighting in a World War?
The stigma most certainly needs to be stopped. The struggle of depression and anxiety is as real as cancer. Mental health days may lesson absences for physical illness as well. 👍
How is this different from any other medical excuse?
It’s about time. I think there’s just as much stigma about mental health in society at large, but I think by teaching children to take care of both their physical and mental health, there would be a complete change in society’s attitudes within 10 years.
There's no way kids will abuse this. Absolutely no possible way in the world.
Nobody will be attending classes in California.
cool. now do this for contingent faculty.
YEAH SO INTEREST ON TUITION CAN CLIMB TO UNPRECENDENTED LEVELS FOR THEM!!!
I used to take mental health days all the time
When I was a Freshman in Milledgeville, Ga. waking up every day wondering if I would have stomach butterflies all day (and as soon as I wondered, it triggered it), terrified about dating and ceasing to exist, and curling up saying 'What's happening to me?' I could have used this.
Children do not receive a salary for the information processing job forced upon them for 13 years from age 5. The constant judgment and documentation being forced upon them while they are submissively detained in locked cages with armed teachers being enriched. Stupid parents.
Started doing this for my kids 10 years ago, when they were getting totally overwhelmed in high school. Knowing they had support for stepping away from the pressure for a day helped them manage their stress, which had mental and emotional benefits for all of us.
This is amazing news. My son lost credits in college for seeking treatment and not being able to attend classes. $40k down the drain. I hope no other family goes through that.
Don't parents already vouch for their kids who need a day like this?
Absolutely fantastic.
Whats the data on how it worked?
Mental health is vastly underestimated we need more of this
munin WHAT THE HELL IS THIS SHIT Seriously what kind of broken education system requires *any* justification for an absence to be excused? Where I'm from you just call in and it's excused.
We all need mental health days, but how do you ensure the system is not abused?
Parents already do this with their kids so.....
Much needed!
Can teachers have mental health days? edchat
considers... why isn't mental health taken seriously?
My wife doesn’t need a mental health law. She goes shopping any time she wants!
Is this what it takes to be an indoctrinated snowflake?
👍🏻👍🏻
This should be nation wide.
That's bunk. In an absolutely perfect world that mythology championed by PC advocates just might work.
Good
They might as well give them all Election Day off...actually, give them off the whole damn week judging from their response last year. Be sure to double up on the coloring books and safety pins.
Students will always take mental health days, sanctioned or not.
