A study found delayed school start times align more closely with the sleep-wake cycle of teenagers—leading to better overall health and school performance.

Senate Bill 328, signed by Governor Gavin Newsom on Sunday, requires most middle schools to begin no earlier than 8:00 a.m. and high schools at 8:30 a.m.

“Although a number of factors, including biological changes in sleep associated with puberty, lifestyle choices, and academic demands, negatively affect middle and high school students’ ability to obtain sufficient sleep, the evidence strongly implicates earlier school start times as a key modifiable contributor to insufficient sleep, as well as circadian rhythm disruption, in this population,” the study said.

Why did it take them so long to find this out? You would think after a few months of students falling asleep in the early morning classes, they would figure this out!

only in the older kids did this help

Weird. My nephews stay up all night on Twitter and playing video games.

Correction: It's not 'a study.' Its a huge, broad & consistent body of evidence that led the AAP recommending that middle and high schools start at times that allow for healthy sleep startschoollater SB328

From my fifty years of experience and following research as a high school and university educator as well as a K-12 administrator this makes good sense. There is more than one study and solid, positive results from practice supporting a late start. Lawrence

A district near here changed to later times two years ago. They quickly adapted and all after school meetings and activities were moved to early hours. No real change for students involved in any club or sport.

Time changes won't apply to sports, only non-competitive students

Make 'em lazy, make 'em dumb, and make 'em useless. Easier to control that way...

My 6 year old son had to be up at 5:30 to be ready to catch the bus at 6:15! Just ridiculous that any kid has to start school that early. After 2 years of this we switched him to A charter school that starts at 8:30. Grades and behavior went up instantly

Ok, who’s gonna make them go to bed, the school district?😂😂 Trust me kids are just gonna stay up later.

nickwiger isn’t this where Cameron Diahhz went to school?

An effort to stop overnight jail releases in California is rejected by Gov. NewsomA bill to curb late-night jail releases, passed in response to a woman's overdose death after leaving county custody, was vetoed by Gov. Gavin Newsom. Again further protecting the rights in criminals who should have had those rights discarded as soon as they committed the crime. This State of CA has so much wrong with it. It’s a nightmare to live in it. It’s a disgrace to be associated - this is all very distressing to say too. Can't lose votes. EVERYTHING GOES Late night releases from mass incarceration centers is inhumane and seems determined to increase recidivism
