Process begins to return California beach to descendants nearly a century later
On Tuesday, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted 5-0 to return the property to the descendants of Willa and Charles Bruce. In 1924, the city of Manhattan Beach used eminent domain to force the couple off their land to turn it into a park. The city seized the property in 1929, however, it remained vacant for decades.Following Tuesday's vote, the Los Angeles County Chief Executive Office will file a report within 60 days with a plan and timeline to return the property to the Bruce family.
"This was an injustice inflicted upon not just Willa and Charles Bruce, but generations of their descendants who almost certainly would have been millionaires if they had been able to keep this property and their successful business," Los Angeles County District 4 Supervisor Janice Hahn said. Hahn's district includes the Manhattan Beach property to be returned to the family.

Kick the lifeguards off the property. Make them inconveniently have to uproot and relocate elsewhere, hopefully at great expense. Give them the same respect that the Bruce family was given when they were kicked off the land, only for it to sit unused for decades.
Completely agree this land must be returned to the family. The government need to give them money for back rent. Or no taxes on the land as long as the family owns the land. Once sold taxes could be re-established. I think the family should get options & they choose.

The sad part is, it will be seized again, if they can’t afford to pay the property taxes on it. unless they allow them to waive the taxes until they can sell it or find another way to pay for it. should’ve gave them today’s market value for the land instead!

In 1924, my family owned about 15k acres of Napa, Sonoma, and Mendocino. Unfortunately, they went broke the old fashioned way—-Great Depression, big families, bad marriages, bad apples.

Ardamora My understanding us beaches cannot be privately owned in Calif. I suppose this refer to houses near the beach? Some owners try to control beach in front of their property by making access difficult. It's legally questionable & if you walk in they can't kick you out.
