A storm system tapping into an atmospheric river is pummeling California this morning with heavy rain, snow and high winds. Forecast:

The heaviest band of rainfall from this storm system has spread into areas south of the Bay Area, where it's likely to stall out through Wednesday night. This area of heavier rain will then slowly progress southward toward Southern California Thursday into Friday.

Meanwhile, this storm's wintry side, named Winter Storm Orlena by The Weather Channel, is bringing heavy snowfall and blizzard conditions to the Sierra Nevada.The storm system has already prompted flash flood warnings to be issued early Wednesday for several burn areas to the south of the Bay Area.High winds had knocked out power toin Northern California as of 3 a.m. PST on Wednesday, according to poweroutage.us. Wind gust over 60 mph have been clocked in the Sacramento metro area.

Blizzard conditions were reported late Tuesday on Interstate 5 in far Northern California near the town of Weed.Flash flood watches have been issued by the National Weather Service from Napa and Sonoma Counties through parts of the Bay Area southward to south of Monterey into Thursday afternoon.
