California and Nevada were both rocked by a 4.7 magnitude earthquake felt in Reno and Sacramento on Thursday night, officials have reported.
The United States Geological Survey said the earthquake's epicenter was about 11 miles northwest of Truckee, California. People in the nearby Nevada cities Reno and Carson City have so far reported feeling moderate and light tremors, according to a USGS map. Sacramento residents also reported feeling weak tremors from the earthquake. Some people said they felt minor shakes as far away as the coastal city of San Francisco. At the time of writing, more than 6,800 people have submitted"felt reports" to the USGS.
Sacramento Metro Fire said no damage in the state capital had been flagged as of early Friday morning, the local stationThe National Weather Service in Reno tweeted that staff felt the shake in their offices, but so far no damage from the earthquake has been recorded.05/07/21 02:50 a.m. ET: This article was updated to include a photo of the quake zone from USGS.
