Buyer beware? What to know about direct-to-consumer antibody tests.

But they admit that for individual people hoping to use the tests to make better decisions about their health, antibody results may be less helpful, at least until questions around their accuracy are resolved and scientists learn more about recovered COVID-19 patients.

Not all antibody tests are created equal. There are two major types of COVID-19 antibody tests available to consumers: rapid antibody tests, which, like a pregnancy test, can give yes or no results within minutes, or a laboratory-based antibody test, which can take a couple of hours to process and provide more information on the level of antibodies present.

According to Grenache, specificity refers to the tests’ ability to accurately return a negative result. At the start of the U.S. pandemic, the FDA allowed commercial manufacturers to distribute their own antibody tests as long as they had self validated their own tests and provided evidence to the FDA.

A registered nurse draws blood to test for COVID-19 antibodies at Abyssinian Baptist Church in the Harlem neighborhood of New York, May 14, 2020.The timeline, however, for when this review process will be complete or when the agency will take action against questionable antibody tests is still unclear. For now, only 12 COVID-19 antibody tests have received emergency authorization by the FDA. The FDA publicly shares information about these tests online.

Scientists are still learning about whether or not antibodies confer any protection or immunity from future reinfection. In fact, the World Health Organization has cautioned against issuing “immunity passports” for people who test positive, saying"at this point in the pandemic, there is not enough evidence about the effectiveness of antibody-mediated immunity.”

Yes! It's important to know if you've had it, b/c some people had mild symptoms. I want to know if my flu was a milder case if COVID-19 or not.

What's the point? Who would accept the results from random tester?

Nope

Yes it won't hurt. Even if you take it with a grain of salt

Yes, but it has to be the CORRECT test. Have they found which test is 100% accurate? Or 99.9%?

Fear mongering is so f'n cool.... Good luck with that 👍 meow

Never getting any tests. Open it up.

I wonder if their accuracy is suspect why are they allowed

Why wouldn't you if given the chance? Any and all info at this point is imperative.

Well, only people who had tested positive, right? I don't see how everyone getting a test would be useful.

First, never listen to anything ABC says They are the enemy

No thanks

Seems certain states have lumped covid-19 positive tests with covid-19 positive for antibodies tests together, resulting in inaccurate higher numbers. So,my answer is no.

How about you guys cover news not opinions?

The tests we have now are only partly useful (ie, only good if your body's made enough covid to be detected by the test). If a person who tests negative is immediately treated like a person who is CONFIRMED negative, there can be unnecessary spread. pls RT

You really don't want to know how many people have had this already do you?

Yes! As long as its free like in NYC.

Follow the John Hopkins guidelines . The problem with that is most have a high false positive rate . Not very specific . It’s useful when someone’s been tested positive for covid on pcr in order to donate plasma but the best thing right now is test disease and contact/trace .
