Homeless Encampments,Drug Use,Sheriff's Office

Business owners joined the mayor of Burien Thursday to publicly raise concerns about safety around several growing homeless encampments in the city.

A homeless encampment blocks from Burien City Hall in south King County begins to be cleared in the morning on June 1, 2023.

“If open drug use and open drug sales, harassment, and break-ins are just the norm, then what are we doing?” said Hector Ramos, who owns La Costa Mexican Restaurant. “It’s just constant drug use and mayhem. I think we need a new definition of what we have here. We have people living in tents, but this is not homelessness in my opinion.”

Two other business owners who spoke at Thursday's press conference said they had been accosted by people with weapons. The sheriff's office says deputies assigned to the Burien police have made 439 arrests this year, including 82 for public drug use or drug possession. Cole-Tindall said the federal lawsuits may ultimately decide the fate of Burien's encampment ordinance.
