The United Nations General Assembly has a reputation for being, well...a bit dry, but that could not have been further from the case on Monday, when K-pop sensation BTSto promote the COVID-19 vaccine, discuss environmental issues, and celebrate the resiliency of Gen Z. Their presentation ended with a prerecorded video of their hit song “Permission to Dance,” and it was all streamed live by some one million BTS fans via the U.N.’s YouTube channel.
President Moon Jae-in of South Korea designated BTS a special presidential envoy for future generations and culture at the General Assembly, and the group’s seven-minute speech was both relevant and moving. “I’ve heard that people in their teens and 20s today are being referred to as COVID’s lost generation,”BTS’s RM. Continued fellow member Jin, “We think that instead of the lost generation, a more appropriate name would be the welcome generation.
Vaccine resistance and lack of access are still among the largest stumbling blocks in the global response to COVID-19, with almost half of all Americans still unvaccinated as of September. Ultimately, it may well take a combination ofand encouragement from pop-cultural icons like BTS to get more of the world population to embrace the COVID-19 vaccine .
