Chantiers de l'Atlantique has collaborated with the Norwegian engineering firm for the Orient Express Silenseas cruise ships project.

Two companies with almost 300 years of history combined set sail towards sustainable luxury with the Orient Express Silenseas cruise ships.Chantiers de l’Atlantique, a shipbuilder with more than 150 years of experience in the industry, has collaborated with Brunvoll, a Norwegian engineering firm that will serve as the propulsion supplier of the Orient Express Silenseas cruise ships, touted to be the world’s largest sailing ships.

The ships will be powered by a 25DF dual-fuel engine from Wärtsilä, meaning that they will be powered by liquefied natural gas and would be hydrogen-ready. This is an important step toward promoting sustainable practices in the maritime industry. Project manager Yann PenduffArnfinn Brautaset said that this project confirms Brunvoll as one of the frontrunners concerning propulsion design and main propulsion efficiency.

In March, the French government and maritime stakeholders signed a pact for wind-assisted ship propulsion. It is a promising technology that has the potential to decarbonize the shipping industry. The goal is to capture 30% of the global market share with French wind propulsion technology. “The development of the French sailing sector is a major opportunity for green reindustrialization, ” said the French Minister Delegate for Industry Roland Lescure.
