When Connie Mack, who managed until he was 87, was brought up Bochy said, “I promise you,” while chuckling, “that’s not me.”

Riding with the World Series trophy, Texas Rangers manager Bruce Bochy and his wife Kim Seib wave to fans lining the street and buildings during the World Series Victory Parade outside Globe Life Field in Arlington, Nov. 3, 2023. The Rangers defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks, 4-1.performed a little surgery on his left Nike this week to relieve pressure on his foot. Not a good look. Then again, neither is his mound visit. Like he’s on just one skate.

He wouldn’t have returned if he didn’t think the Rangers would win, but he didn’t come back just to win another title, either. He’s been asked that question since Game 5., who questioned why he’d want to come out of retirement in the first place, said he couldn’t quit now.Of course, Kim’s feelings matter. She liked having him home, when, as she put it, all she worried about was what was for dinner. But she also knows her husband is built for a baseball life.

One of these days he knows he must make a decision. Maybe based on his family. Maybe his health. He’ll be 68 in April. His father died of a heart attack at 65. Bochy has two stents himself. He said his cardiologist told him he’ll die of something someday, but, if he makes his annual check-ups, it won’t be on his watch.Bochy said he feels as in tune sitting in a dugout as he did 20 years ago, only he’s wiser now. He appreciates and enjoys it more than he did then. Loves the camaraderie.

The greatest manager in Rangers history, if not anyone’s, proved in San Francisco he won’t overstay his welcome. Not like La Russa. Not like Joe Torre or Joe Maddon or Joe Girardi. Bochy’s ego, such as it is, rarely clouds his judgment. From where he sits, he sees a clubhouse full of talent and character, a grateful fan base and an organization still trying to improve. He can’t see past Thursday’s opener. Just the same, if it were my decision, I’d tell him he can stay as long as he wants before he gets any other ideas. Even got a little apartment out back if he needs it. Might provide a defense against the in-laws.
