I really do not give a rats ass about this Griner story. That said,, did anyone really think Russian courts where going to just overturn the lower court on this? This is GOLD in their eyes. They THINK that they have a bargaining chip, which they won't give up easily.
Maybe if the US was as harsh with our penalties, there would not be revolving jail doors and criminals might think twice about committing crimes. How many criminals are let out with little or no time and end up committing more crimes?
