PREDICTING EARTHQUAKES is doomed to failure, as seismologists well know. But some political earthquakes are a different matter. In the early hours of June 7th, the Brexit Party’s candidate, Mike Greene, came close to winning the first seat in Parliament for a party that was created just two months earlier. He fell just 683 votes short of Labour’s winning candidate in a by-election in Peterborough .
Trends in party support now look more like the wobbly lines of a seismometer than the decades-old separation between the two biggest parties and the rest. Brexit is the main cause of their instability. Historically, the Conservatives and Labour have fought elections mainly on domestic issues, such as levels of government spending and the National Health Service.
This is the culmination of social changes that have been taking place since the 1980s, and reflect striking differences between old and young, and between university graduates and the poorly educated. But the two main parties have so been able to rely on Britain’s first-past-the-post electoral system—which penalises smaller parties—to hold on to a disproportionate share of seats in Parliament. Given the state of the polls, as well as the results from Peterborough, their supremacy is at stake.
If this would end the two party system, than there is something positive brought about by Brexit
even if people are wrong now, they prefer the easy one. We're a stupid world, hard to think..
Bannon has been going into European countries and spreading the Trump message. He has a nerve IMO. Spreading more of the worst of America. I’m surprised Europe buys into his lunacy. Many Canadians have turned stupid but we have the disadvantage of living next to the beast.
This is happening in all western countries. For some strange reason voters are embracing Trump like politicians who lack any semblance of common decency. I’d like to know what has happened, to turn what were once, thinking people, into hateful and ignorant voters. Bannonization.
Britain's withdrawal from Europe is a factor of long-term instability
To be continue
Nigel_Farage is going to be the next PrimeMinister of GreatBritain. Keep that in mind.
If UK had AV or ranked ballots wouldn't be a problem. Usually FTFP helps avoid this and certainly avoids the mess mainland Europe which uses PR has, but AV is best way to stability and avoid vote splitting.
This is because we have weak, listless, energyless..and rubbish leaders of Both main political parties! 😲🙄🙄😣
A Mafeking insight. Watch for the dead cat bounce.
I think you mean England’s leading parties since you haven’t included the main parties of Scotland or Wales or of Nothern Ireland either.
