Ongoing dry, hot conditions have prompted Brazoria County on June 23 to issue a burn ban for unincorporated areas. The ban prohibits outdoor burning but does not affect the sale or use of fireworks in unincorporated areas, according to a county press release.

Violations of the ban order include burning or ordering the burning of any combustible material outside of an enclosure that contains all flames or sparks. Use of contained barbecue pits and grills are permitted, but open flame pits are not allowed. When the temperature reaches within the 600-800 range on the Keetch-Byram Drought Index , conditions are considered severe and a concern for wildfires. On June 22, the KBDI for Brazoria County was 684.

If the weather conditions improve for safe outdoor burning within 90 days and the KBDI average falls below 400 for five consecutive days, County Judge Matt Sebesta may authorize the burn ban to be lifted, the release stated.
