Brandi Carlile pays tribute to her longtime heroes and friends, the Indigo Girls: 'They’ve never asked for credit, but they deserve it.'

The other thing was their harmonies. My brother, who is only 11 months younger than me, we’ve been singing harmonies together since we were little. He’s not easily impressed, but he was so impressed by their harmonies — it was the first time we’d heard anyone, other than the Everly Brothers, where we couldn’t tell who was singing at any given time, even though they don’t sound similar to one another. The harmonies are so clever that you can’t predict the note that’s about to be sung next.

I think that the fan base also recognized that the Indigo Girls were a revolutionary, legendary musical duo that have delved into areas of production, harmony, vocalization, musicality, rhythm, that so few people have done, and have been at times in their career utterly rejected by mainstream music and the press for their queerness, and just their lack of adherence to gender and traditional understandings of what they should look like and how they should be.

I don’t ever write a lyric ever that I wouldn’t feel comfortable sending to Emily Saliers. That’s a standard that I’ve set. I’ve noticed over the years that it’s become Emily Saliers and Joni Mitchell, and I never understood how close the two of them are, musically. I took Emily Saliers over to meet Joni Mitchell before Covid hit, and again, it was like I was 14, I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. I suddenly made the connection between the two of them.

kdittmar A thousand times this!

brandicarlile The Indigo Girls were absolutely defining for me as a young lesbian finding myself & my political identity. You pay tribute to them with such grace, detail, humility, & explain so accurately the impact they've made. And I ❤️ the way you connect your mentors. Beautiful!

brandicarlile This is effing beautiful.

brandicarlile Nice share.

brandicarlile what a lovely piece about talent and friendship. I live in Decatur, GA and 20 years ago or so I would see them everywhere here including the grocery store and it was so cool and comforting.

You gotta give credit where credit is due.

brandicarlile I’ve been an Indigo_Girls fan since Closer To Fine. I dont think I’ve missed a gig when they’ve come east (NYC/NJ) all these years. Everything Brandi said is spot on. To know they r family -like friends warms my ❤️. Grace, talent, kinship generationally combine. Awesome
