As is often the case in the streaming era, a film that once would have been a big deal in theaters has now debuted on a streaming platform. Two weeks ago, it was Sony’swhich they sold to Amazon for $200 million. Today it’s 20th Century Studios’debuting this morning on Disney+. I have not seen the 86-minute feature yet, and honestly I’m not exactly racing to the couch to do so.
Remember, we were just five years out fromflameout. The surprisingly grim and mournful dramedy, about a mammoth mourning his slain wife and kid reluctantly teaming up with an exiled sloth and a conflicted saber tooth to return a lost human child to what family he had left, was a blunt and unapologetic movie about extinction and death. Cue a $46 million opening and a $176 million domestic/$386 million worldwide cume on a $65 million budget.
