Box office analysis: Hollywood's high hopes for summer end with bummer

While a record number of summer tentpoles crossed the $1 billion mark at the global box office — thanks mostly to Disney — the season is headed for a troublesome finish as the Labor Day weekend approaches.

Preliminary Comscore estimates show summer revenue clocking in at $4.33 billion through Sept. 3, a 2 percent decline over the same corridor in 2018. This puts additional pressure on the September-December calendar to close the 6 percent year-to-date gap over 2019, when ticket sales in North America hit a record high of $11.9 billion.

The gap between the haves and the have-nots at the box office has never been greater, and neither has the domination by one major Hollywood studio — Disney., crossed the $100 million threshold at the domestic box office. That compares with two last year:

Nobody wants to watch Hollywood’s new woke bullshit

Liberalism

Ratings on movies that make it to libraries of .hbo and .Showtime = 30-40. Acres of crap. Even TCN seems to have a few everyday that should have just maybe not even been made. Guess it gave some folks work though...

Why is this news. Summer has always been the time studios release garbage: infantile cutesy movies with predictable boring plotlines, dumbed down characters, superheros that vary only in CGI plug-ins, and embarrassing attempts to be topical.

Fraud in the WGAWest Variety Lanisters running rampant in Hollywood pretty much...

AvengersEndgame happened, that's what happened, nothing could top that off, and Marvel darn well knew it, it's actually a very easy move.

Stop making shit movies

superhero fans bitching.

The days of great scripts, screenplays, roles and films are behind us. There’s barely a handful each year which get close to making the grade. Creativity and originality is at its lowest point ever.

One reason is really crummy movies directed by PC mandated directors who are incompetent.

The shoot out in Angel Has Fallen made the summer worthwhile.

BAMOK Gotta be honest, the summer movie list left me with a big ‘meh.’ I’m good on superhero sequels for awhile, thx

Hollywood could stop pushing SJW over interesting characters invest less in effects and more in writing But it won't. It recycles old franchises because they don't make a Terminator, a Predator, an Alien anymore

Bad movies deserve to die. Good movies deserve to thrive.

John Wick 3, Detective Pikachu and Yesterday are the only three films that did better than expected as all others including Disney's performed slightly less than expected especially Toy Story 4 expected $600m+ The Lion King $800m+ Endgame $1bn+

Are you really including Little Women among the promising remaining tentpoles this year of It: Chapter 2, Joker, Terminator: Dark Fate, Frozen 2, Jumanji 2 and Star Wars when Lady Bird took $50m at the BO the same amount the 1994 version of Little Women took?

Blame global warming, nobody wants to sit inside a cinema when it's so darn hot! Dark Phoenix wasn't a good film to be fair and we've just had Avengers break box office records. Cinema seems to be doing alright, cracking indie films out there which you just need to go look for!

Maybe its because 90% of the movies they put out are garbage.

They put out movies that just weren’t good and canceled the movie I was pretty excited about

the bummer was Dark Phoenix didn't have an R rating or sex scene
