KingRichard became the latest adult-oriented drama to crumble at the box office. However, it may be slightly premature to call it an out-and-out bomb because Warner Bros. is releasing it concurrently on HBO Max, which likely cut into ticket sales.

,” a sequel to the 1980s sci-fi comedy classic, opened at No. 1 in North America, collecting a solid $44 million from 4,315 venues. The better-than-expected result is an encouraging sign that family audiences are willing to visit their local multiplex, provided there’s something broadly entertaining to be found there. During the pandemic, parents with young kids haven’t been the most active ticket buyers, but that could change now that COVID-19 vaccines have been deemed safe for children.

It may be slightly premature to call “King Richard” an out-and-out bomb because Warner Bros. is releasing it concurrently on HBO Max, which likely cut into ticket sales. The company didn’t report any HBO Max viewership metrics. Warners is hoping that positive sentiment from audiences, who gave the film an “A” CinemaScore,” and awards chatter for Smith could extend its life in theaters and keep the movie playing throughout the holidays.

“King Richard” landed in fourth place on box office charts, behind holdovers Marvel’s “Eternals” and Paramount’s “Clifford the Big Red Dog.”

The movie was amazing

The Dune is definite proof that the blockbusters can be more than a mere visual spectacle. And that there is great interest for more such movies. Now, give us the DuneMovie director's cut!

Nice report

Surprising as Will Smith does quality and thought a lot of people would be interested in the story of the tennis stars? What the facts probably are is that 'dramas' are probably done in theatres and will have to settle for streaming at home.

King Richard being released on HBO Max is just an excuse the problem is the industry has failed to deal with older audiences have been very slow to return to cinemas since they reopened which they knew was going to be an issue 18 months ago as their own research said so

No need to see dramas in theaters.

Loved this film.

Don’t do that to this film! It was well made. Ppl just aren’t going to the movie theaters anymore. Plain and simple. Being honest I’d rather watch new releases from the comfort of my home these days.

Hey voguemagazine, news media, etc…News Flash…releasing on streaming service is not going anywhere. You and the other “that’s the way we have always done it” folks are going to have to figure out a new way to measure success of a movie. Not just about ticket sales anymore.

Or people decided watching a brilliant sports movie would be a great idea to do in the comfort of their homes because it works well on both small and big screens? Also, awards contenders generally do better on streaming anyway

I saw practically ZERO promo for it, too - no ads on TV or web, no outdoor advertising, just a few PR articles here & there and maybe a few HBOMAX combo ads 🤷🏻‍♂️💣💀

Watched it on hbomax and it was fantastic

There is so much well written drama on streaming platforms, that I'm not sure it will ever get a foothold at the box office again. Certainly not with all CGI laden movies being made that look better on the big screen.

We're watching it on hbomax
