Amid the coronavirus crisis, many governments including the U.S. have imposed limits on exporting medical goods to protect their own supplies. It's a tactic that might backfire, some manufacturers and trade analysts warn.

But Chris Rogers, a supply chain analyst with S&P Global Panjiva, says even large manufacturing powerhouses like the U.S., the European Union and China should think twice before trying to rely exclusively on their own output."This kind of closing of borders, whilst it might help drive or provide an economic incentive for countries to become more self-sufficient, the time taken to do that should probably be measured in months rather than weeks," Rogers says.

3M also cautioned that blocking exports would have"humanitarian implications," since it would cut off some other countries' only supply of the masks. Thomas Tighe, the CEO of the medical aid group Direct Relief, says he understands why this argument might not sit well with some."I think the concern is obvious," he says."Why would anyone send anything other than to the U.S., given this is our home? But I think it's also true that countries that have very little to begin with are looking at this wave of COVID-19 cases coming with no protection.

"The moment we're in, it feels tribal," he says."But don't forget, there are other people as well who may be in even worse need."

Greed and unfettered capitalism kills.

Yeah, that's a bad look. Gov. Newsom is smart organizing the production of masks, distributing them around the US and selling or donating them around the world. Somebody running for President in 2024?

Yes it will damage global trade. Saw estimates of it possibly taking 10% off the top permanently

Seven Days, Hundreds of Deaths: New York’s Worst Week Yet Tests Its Coronavirus ResponseFive died on Friday, five on Thursday, four on Wednesday; two on Tuesday; five Monday; three on Sunday. The miserable accounting by doctors in New York City, which Monday reported the most coronavirus deaths in a single day, 731. Covid related? Perhaps? You should expose the fraud in the count. Brix says that all deaths if the virus is present are counted as CovID19 deaths no matter the true proximate cause. Remember y'all: these are the deaths they are testing for COVID19 ... there are others from pneumonia or other illnesses they are NOT adding in. Also all the people who are avoiding hospitals, or can't be treated, those deaths are uncounted. BernieIsOurHope
