Boeing was in the spotlight on Capitol Hill as hearings added to the pressure the company is facing to restore faith in the troubled airline manufacturer.

Senators are sworn in and will begin debate over the procedures for the impeachment trial of DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.FILE - Boeing employees walk the new Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner down towards the delivery ramp area at the company's facility after conducting its first test flight at Charleston International Airport, Friday, March 31, 2017, in North Charleston, S.C.

“They hear, ‘Safety is our No. 1 priority,’" de Luis said. “What they see is that’s only true as long as your production milestones are met, and at that point it’s ‘Push it out the door as fast as you can.’”“We need to judge Boeing by what it does not by what it says it's doing. Boeing says it prioritizes safety above all else,” said Sen. Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill.

Witnesses at both hearings testified that despite the company’s public proclamations that it wants employees to come forward with safety concerns, there are fears of payback and retribution for those who decide to come forward. During the briefing on Monday, two Boeing executives said the 787 Dreamliner’s carbon-composite skin is nearly impervious to metal fatigue that weakens aluminum fuselages, the term for the panels on the plane. According to the company, the planes go through an exhaustive testing and analysis process that investigate the gaps and ensure its safety.

Calhoun called the Alaska Airlines incident a “watershed moment” that will spur changes in its manufacturing and safety culture and allow it to emerge as a better company.
