The company is still assessing a helium leak in the service module of its Starliner capsule, whose test launch with astronauts has now been postponed three times.

By Christian Davenport, The Washington PostThe Boeing CST-100 Starliner spacecraft rolls out of the Vertical Integration Facility to Space Launch Complex-41 on May 18, 2022.

The flight, which was originally scheduled for May 6, is now set for no earlier than May 25 at 3:09 p.m. Eastern from Cape Canaveral, Fla. Still, NASA, which is paying Boeing $4.2 billion under the commercial crew contract, said Boeing wants to take additional time “to develop operational procedures to ensure the system retains sufficient performance capability and appropriate redundancy during the flight.”

But Boeing has struggled with the Starliner, which has cost the company $1.4 billion as it has worked through a series of problems over several years, including major software issues, valves that were corroded shut, a parachute redesign, flammable tape found inside the capsule and now the helium leak.
