An Alabama Senate Judiciary Committee voted no toSenator Merika Coleman, Pleasant Grove, sponsored the bill.During the committee meeting Wednesday, Senator Coleman says it was the first time she got real feedback about the bill.“We have to do something. It is not okay with me to sit back and allow these families to continue to endure this agony when I as a lawmaker can do something about it,” Senator Coleman said.She named it the “Jawan Dallas and Stephen Perkins” Act.
Senator Coleman says Senate Bill 14 would have allowed the release of body cam footage much sooner to these families. Senator Coleman says once the video is public record not only will the families have access, but the press as well.
