The serene landscape paintings of Bob Ross have become a war zone.

A new Netflix documentary tells the story of the TV painter’s adult son, who complains that his father’s memory has been improperly commercialized by longtime business partners who won control of his name and likeness. Now that the family behind that business,–directed film “inaccurate and heavily slanted.”

One of their most incendiary complaints is that the filmmakers acted in bad faith. “While the producers of the Netflix film did contact Bob Ross Inc. twice, in late August and October 2020, each request arrived replete with a confounding lack of transparency,” the statement says. “At no time did they pose specific questions to Bob Ross Inc. or ask for any form of rebuttal to specific assertions they had decided to include in the film.

Netflix previously streamed classic episodes of Ross’s old painting series, which led to renewed interest in his work decades after his death at age 52 in 1995. The show, which is still controlled by Bob Ross Inc., is no longer on the service.Rofé said in a statement: “Our mission has always been to tell a truthful story about the life and legacy of Bob Ross. And we stand by the film we made.

The movie states that the company’s owners declined to participate in the project, and at the end it features title cards in which the firm disputes some of the film’s more inflammatory claims. The company says it sent more complaints than those seen in the film—and that it initiated those final responses.

“After seeing media reports about the film’s summer release, Bob Ross Inc. attempted to reach out to the filmmakers in May 2021 to offer comment,” the company statement says. “They did not return calls or emails and finally responded through their attorney. We provided a comprehensive statement, and the filmmakers chose not to use it.

Bob Ross Inc. Responds to Netflix Doc as Melissa McCarthy, Ben Falcone Say They Didn’t Set Out to Create a “Hit Piece”In a statement, BRI denounced 'Bob Ross: Happy Accidents, Betrayal, and Greed' as 'inaccurate and heavily slanted' while the producers of the film about the iconic TV painter say the team faced an uphill battle speaking to sources who were 'afraid of getting sued.' SO THIS IS A HIT PIECE ABOUT A company… not the artist as you claim. Can't believe my friend wanted to pull off a FAKEABABY fake ultrasound prank on him to keep him several years ago, LOL! Kidding aside, hope to hear more about what happened!
