For almost 50 years, the BMW art cars have been captivating fans across the globe. Often race cars but sometimes for the road- as well they're nothing if not memorable. Perhaps not always to all tastes, but that's appropriate for any car conveying 'art' as a topic.
The new comic book paint job combines 11 colours, and is so labour intensive that the entire 99-car production run of THE 8 X JEFF KOONS will take almost six months. Each one takes 200 hours of hand painting, so only four will be finished each week. Apparently the pop art and geometric patterns pay homage"to the sporty 8 Series Gran Coupe's intricate contours and shape."
BMW will build 99 examples of THE 8 X JEFF KOONS ; once this car has been on show in Manhattan, one of the 99 will be sold at Christie's in New York to raise money for the International Centre for Missing & Exploited Children. The one seen here will be on display at the Festival of Speed, Paris Photo and Art Basel Hong Kong, amongst other exhibitions, during 2022.
