On the campaign trail, 2020 presidential hopefuls, Sen. Kamala Harris and Sen. Elizabeth Warren, are highlighting the disproportionately high rates of pregnancy-related deaths among black women — an issue health care providers and lawmakers increasingly are flagging as a crisis.
According to a study conducted by the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, “considerable racial disparities in pregnancy-related mortality exist.” In the most recent data retrieved by the CDC, during 2011-2014, the pregnancy-related mortality ratios were 12.4 deaths per 100,000 live births for white women compared to the 40 deaths per 100,000 live births for black women.
“Even Serena Williams — a world-class tennis champion — was invisible in that moment. To Kamala, using Serena Williams as an example of black women and child birth is very ambiguous. There are many cause for pulmonary embolism. It sounds more like a race card example for the sake of the Black vote. Shame on you!
Yes racism lives on our hospitals. A pregnant woman in labor can not protect or defend herself. She is at the mercy of white and immigrant racists within our medical facilities. So are our elderly and disabled who are incapable of advocating. Something must be done.
How long have they been in politics couldn’t they have brought up this issue before now
In 2015 tRump told 60 Minutes that his health plan would provide universal health coverage paid by the government. “I am going to take care of everybody”, tRump said. My question is where is it? GOP has had over two years to 'replace' with Trumpcare!
I wish them well in trying to tackle the problem, but I find it curious is that what is promised during the campaign, never comes to reality once elected.
Why do they take money from the number one killer of black babies?
Lawmakers as they put it are real good at 'flagging' issues out there that need to be addressed. However they are terrible about doing anything about it once they do. This has been an issue for some time with no results from lawmakers as to how to solve it.
